Spiritual Amnesia

About four weeks ago my wife and I went to Dallas Texas to celebrate the engagement of our middle daughter. On Sunday we all went to church together and the pastor shared an illustration from the movie 50 First Dates. It touched my heart deeply.

In that movie there is a woman named Lucy who was in an automobile accident. After the accident she had amnesia. She could never remember what happened the day before. The problem with that is there’s a guy who falls in love with her and because she cannot remember what happened the day before, he has to keep re-introducing himself to her. He must keep going on a first date with her.

There’s a scene toward the end of the movie where Lucy wakes up and is disoriented because she doesn’t remember anything. There is a TV sitting right by her bed and there is a tape on top of the TV that says good morning Lucy.  She puts the tape into the player and watches it and it shows her present reality. She learns that she was in an accident and because of that she cannot remember anything.  She cannot remember she has amazing friends, a husband that loves her. On the tape she is invited to come outside and join the family.  She puts on her jacket and goes out and sees her husband that she doesn’t remember and kisses him, and she is also able to hug her daughter.  This was something that she has to do every day to be reminded of who she is, what has happened to her, who her family is, and how much they love her.

As Christians we also battle Spiritual amnesia. When we are not reading and studying the Word of God then we tend to forget who God is, who we are, and all that God has done for us. We start drifting away from Jesus and slowly start living and thinking like the world and everyone around us.  We forget how God has touched our life and we forget what God has done for us, so we need a video tape like Lucy in the movie to wake us up and remind us of our reality in Christ.

This Lenten season, as we are preparing for Easter celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, let’s get our Bibles out and see what God has to say to us today!
